With the recent turmoil in the financial markets many have faced significant declines in their portfolios. This can certainly create feelings of worry and also fear about suffering further losses. It doesn’t really help to remember that a loss is unrealized or not actually a loss until a sale is made but that it is instead a fluctuation in market value. Even so the enormity of the recent decline has affected many investors net worth and even their retirement plans and many jobs have been lost as well. I am saddened by this loss for so many people.
This could make it difficult to get into the spirit of Thanksgiving this year. I would like to share how I talk myself through market losses. Each evening I like to list 5 things that I have been grateful for that day. It can be anything from a hug from one of my sons to the beautiful fall leaves a good trade or a delicious meal. The truth of the matter is that I usually have 3 delicious meals every day. When I think of the magnitude of this among a world where so many are hungry I immediately feel gratitude. When my portfolio has suffered as it has recently along with most everyone else’s I remind myself each day that God has provided everything I needed and more for that one day. I take it one day at a time and I realize that I truly have all I need and more for that day. My hope is that you have all that you need for each day also. We are a nation that is blessed with abundance. Let us give thanks.
