As founder of Financial Woman, Janet Powers invited me to be a financial expert on her radio show, Rebooting Your Mojo, with Mary Jo Rapini. On the show, we’ll be discussing financial stress and how it affects children. Mary Jo is a therapist and author of the book “Is God Pink? Dying to Heal”, which was written after a near death experience.
It is my belief that children usually know what is going on anyway, even when we don’t tell them. They are intuitive little beings, so I believe it is best to age appropriately share with them what is going on with a family’s finances, even if it is challenging. I do think, however, it is important to reassure them that they will be provided for and safe.
Children love to contribute; their self esteem increases from being able to do things that make a difference. While a child should never be made to feel responsible for big money issues, they learn and grow from problems that arise, just as adults do, and from seeing resolution to life’s challenges. While I am certainly not a child therapist, I have two teen aged sons and have learned a great deal about parenting from both my experiences and numerous books and parenting seminars. Sometimes just being a parent calls for therapeutic skills!
Rebooting Your Mojo Radio is at 11CDT on Thursday, October 21, 2010. Replays are available on blogtalkradio.com so you can listen when it is convenient for you. I hope you’ll take the time to listen, especially if you are a parent or a grandparent dealing with money struggles right now and young children; a financial woman encourages financial security for her family and the children in her lives.
